Why do we strut?

2017 marks the 44th year Irmo has held Irmo Okra Strut Festival. To celebrate the anniversary, we asked some of our most dedicated participants why they love the okra strut and why the participate year after year. Here are some of their responses.

Celebrating a Beloved Vegetable and Great Community

Lexington Medical Center is pleased to be the presenting sponsor of the Irmo Okra Strut.

"Lexington Medical Center has been a part of the Irmo community
for more than 30 years,”

said Barbara Willm, vice president of Community Relations and Development at Lexington Medical Center. “The Okra Strut is a celebration of all the great things the Irmo community has to offer. We’re looking forward to this wonderful event."

Larry Slaughter

Okra Strut Committee President

“I remember meeting my neighbors at the Strut, when I first moved here, before I met them in my neighborhood. I remember meeting candidates for president, senate and other candidates; and hearing President George W. Bush recalling his time at the Irmo Okra Strut. Everyone has memories of the Strut: dancing in the parade, dancing at the Friday night Strut, so many other sweet memories. I want to help keep that tradition alive.”

Okra Strut Committee Board Member

“I am on the board & a member of the Lake Murray/Irmo Woman's Club (the founders of the Okra Strut). The club, with a town ordinance, has always had a commission spot open for one of its members. I have been that member for the past 4/5 years. I have lived in the Irmo Community since 1986. When my family was not able to attend, we could sit on our deck Friday night & hear the band! I love the Okra Strut & since I am a member of LMIWC, I feel that I have a vested interest in making it successful each & every year.”
